Background of the study
Digital communication has transformed interactions by offering new platforms for expression and connectivity. In Nigeria, this digital revolution presents opportunities and challenges for indigenous language preservation. On one hand, digital media such as social networks, blogs, and online communities can promote the use of indigenous languages by making them visible and accessible to younger generations (Eze, 2023). On the other hand, the dominance of global languages—particularly English—in digital spaces risks marginalizing indigenous tongues. This shift in language preference threatens the vitality of traditional languages and cultural heritage (Oluwaseun, 2024). As digital communication becomes ubiquitous, the interplay between modern technological trends and traditional linguistic practices is increasingly complex. This study investigates how digital communication affects the preservation of indigenous languages in Nigeria. It aims to explore the dual role of digital media as a tool for both promoting and endangering linguistic diversity, providing insights into strategies that can balance modern communication trends with cultural preservation (Adeola, 2023).
Statement of the problem
The rise of digital communication in Nigeria has raised concerns about the erosion of indigenous languages. While online platforms offer potential for language promotion, the overwhelming presence of global languages, particularly English, often sidelines native tongues (Chukwu, 2024). This marginalization threatens cultural identity and hinders intergenerational transmission of traditional knowledge. The challenge lies in leveraging digital tools to support indigenous language use while mitigating the risk of language loss. This study seeks to address this issue by evaluating the impact of digital communication on indigenous language preservation and identifying effective strategies to foster linguistic sustainability.
